Groundworks

Foundations, drainage, retaining walls and driveway bases. Proper ground, proper builds.

What we do

Everything above grade stands or falls on what's below. We handle the groundworks phase of projects, ours and, selectively, other contractors', with the same quality obsession we bring to the rest: proper excavation, correct dig depth, set-out tolerances that match the drawings, and drainage runs that actually work in wet weather.

  • Strip and trench foundations to engineer's drawings.
  • Reinforced rafts and piled foundations for heavier loads.
  • Surface water drainage, soakaways and Type 3 SuDS compliance.
  • Retaining walls, masonry or reinforced concrete.
  • Driveway and patio bases with correct sub-base compaction.
  • Drainage connections into the mains with Thames Water approvals where needed.

Everything happens on top of the groundworks, so everything rides on them being right

Groundworks determine whether what you build stands true for 50 years or starts cracking after three. The fundamentals are boring and non-negotiable: proper excavation to the engineer's depth, correct sub-base compaction, the right reinforcement in the right position, and drainage runs laid to fall before anything gets poured over them.

We set out with a site laser or a rotating total station, not a tape and a chalk line, because an extension that's 20mm out of square finds itself out of square in every course of brick above it. Drainage gets fall-tested before the trench is backfilled, because digging up a sewer connection that didn't fall properly after the floor slab has been poured is a career-defining embarrassment nobody wants.

Where we're working close to existing buildings, we hand-dig along the party wall line to avoid undermining the neighbour's foundation. Where we're on made-up or unknown ground, we'll take a cue from a trial pit before scoping the full dig, a small, controlled investigation is a bargain compared to finding uncharted Victorian footings twenty minutes into a JCB swing.
