Most extension and refurb projects underspend the garden at the end, which means you spend six months living with beautiful new bifold doors opening onto a churned-up building site. We'd rather price the landscape works in with the build from the outset so the transition from finished floor-level inside to finished garden outside feels continuous.
Paving is where most gardens look cheap or expensive at a glance. 20mm porcelain in large-format (say 600×1200mm) on a compacted Type 1 sub-base with a mortar bed gets you a flat, frost-proof surface that'll still look good in 15 years. Riven natural stone is beautiful but wants an honest appraisal, it's more maintenance, more movement, and harder to level. We'll be straight about the trade-offs.
Outdoor lighting is what lets you actually use the garden after dark. We wire it into the house's lighting circuits, not solar stake lights with dead batteries, on a dedicated dimmable outdoor circuit, with IP65 fittings recessed into paving, uplighters at the base of walls, and perimeter bollards where the design calls for it. Commissioned as part of the main-house scene control so one button on the wall takes the whole house and garden to 'dinner'.
