A brand-new solar and battery install on a standard flat-rate tariff is leaving half the value on the table. Time-of-use tariffs, Octopus Flux, Intelligent, Cosy, Agile, and their equivalents from other suppliers, are what make the battery earn back its cost in years instead of decades.
Flux is the classic solar + battery export play: the tariff pays you a high export rate during the evening peak (typically 4–7pm), so your battery discharges into the grid at premium prices, then recharges from cheap off-peak in the early hours. The right Flux setup can double or triple the annual value of a battery compared to a flat-rate tariff.
The piece that gets skipped by most installers is commissioning the hardware with the tariff schedule. The inverter needs to know when peak, standard and off-peak are; the battery needs to know its target state of charge at each transition; the EV charger needs to be told when to import. We set all of it up on the day, show you the app, and come back at six months to check it's still optimal, tariffs change, and nobody tells you when your auto-enrolled rate has drifted.
