Fault Finding

Tripping breakers, flickering circuits, intermittent faults, diagnosed properly, not patched and hoped for the best.

What we do

Intermittent electrical faults are frustrating because they're often gone by the time the second electrician turns up. We carry proper diagnostic kit, insulation testers, loop testers, thermal imagers, clamp meters, and we work methodically through the install until we find the actual cause, not the symptom.

  • RCD tripping investigations, isolating each circuit in turn.
  • Flickering light diagnosis, driver, dimmer compatibility, neutral faults.
  • Loose connection hunts using thermal imaging.
  • Insulation resistance and continuity testing across suspect circuits.
  • Intermittent fault logging with dataloggers on stubborn issues.
  • Clear written report of what we found and what we did about it.

How we actually find an intermittent fault

Intermittent faults are frustrating because they're often gone by the time you've called someone out. Our approach is the opposite of 'swap the RCD and see': we work through the system until we've either reproduced the fault under controlled conditions or instrumented it enough to catch it next time it appears.

That starts with a proper insulation resistance test on every suspect circuit, which picks up degraded insulation before it actually trips, often the real cause of mysterious intermittent tripping. We follow with thermal imaging of the consumer unit under normal load; loose connections show as bright hotspots long before they become dangerous.

Where a fault is genuinely intermittent and we can't reproduce it on the day, we'll fit a datalogger to the suspect circuit and come back a week later. The logger records current, voltage and any trip events with timestamps, which lets us see patterns, 'it only happens Tuesday morning at 7am' turns out to be an immersion tank heater cycling against a borderline neutral. You can't guess that. You can measure it.

How we actually find an intermittent fault

What you get

Methodical

Proper test-and-prove diagnosis, not 'it's probably the RCD, let's swap it'.

Equipped

Thermal imagers, insulation testers, dataloggers, whatever the fault takes to find.

Honest

If we can't reproduce the fault, we'll tell you, not invent one to bill for.
