What we do

The difference between a proper outbuilding and a shed that needs replacing in five winters is foundations, insulation and a roof that doesn't leak. We build masonry garages and outbuildings with full insulation, insulated roller doors, and the same electrical and lighting standards we'd specify for habitable space.

An outbuilding worth building

The difference between a quality outbuilding and a shed is whether it would be legitimately habitable in a pinch. Proper concrete slab foundation, insulated timber frame or blockwork shell, pitched or flat roof with proper insulation, insulated roller or sectional door on garages, electrics designed for the actual use. None of that is hard; all of it gets skipped on the budget end of the market.

For garages we default to a 200mm concrete slab on compacted sub-base, cavity blockwork shell with 100mm PIR partial-fill insulation, and an insulated sectional or roller door with remote control. EV charging provision gets run in from day one, even if you don't fit the charger yet, the conduit and supply are there for when you do. It's a couple of hundred pounds on the original build; it's a couple of thousand if you have to add it later.

For workshop and gym outbuildings we follow the garden-room insulation standard: warm to live-in standards in winter, cool in summer, independent heating, proper ventilation where the use demands it. If the outbuilding is going to see regular use as a working space, we build it to be genuinely enjoyable to be in, not just weatherproof.
